thoughts are like waves.

Quote

“Thoughts are kind of like waves in the ocean. You can’t stop the waves from coming but you could choose which ones you want to surf. You can’t stop the ideas from popping into your mind but you can choose which ones you focus on, which ones you dwell on.. Because what you focus on is what you’ll feel, and what you feel is what you’ll do…and what you do is who you become..”

Saw this on Instagram recently and it resonated with me deeply. Life is really about what we choose to focus on. Whatever we pay attention to the most comes to the light.

Mind Snack -The Power of Selective Attention

Tip: use the power of selective attention to shape your thoughts and actions.

Science Behind It: Selective attention is a cognitive process where the brain focuses on particular stimuli while ignoring others. Research in cognitive psychology shows that what we pay attention to can significantly influence our emotions and behaviors. This process is closely tied to the brain’s executive functions, which manage our thoughts, actions, and emotions.

How to Apply:

  1. Mindful Awareness: Start by practicing mindfulness meditation. This helps you become aware of your thoughts without judgment, allowing you to notice which thoughts are worth focusing on.

  2. Cognitive Restructuring: When negative or unproductive thoughts arise, consciously choose to shift your focus to more positive and constructive thoughts.

  3. Visualization: Spend a few minutes each day visualizing your goals and the positive outcomes you want to achieve. This primes your brain to recognize and act on opportunities that align with these goals.

  4. Positive Affirmations: Use positive affirmations to reinforce the thoughts and beliefs that support your desired actions and outcomes.

By consciously choosing which thoughts to focus on, you can influence your feelings and actions, ultimately shaping who you become.
